Where the kingdom was made

Your guide meets you wearing a blanket — the traditional Basotho wrap still worn across the highlands today. They'll walk you through a full-scale recreation of a traditional village, past the museum, and toward the sandstone plateau that sits between two rivers. The place feels significant before anyone explains why.

That significance has a name: Thaba Bosiu was the residence and military stronghold of Moshoeshoe I, the founder of Lesotho, throughout most of his reign in the mid-19th century. This is where the Basotho nation was born — which is why the government declared it a national monument in 1967. Just 24 kilometres from Maseru, it's the most important piece of ground in the country.
