Maletsunyane Falls

You'll hear it before you see it

Maletsunyane Falls plunges 192 metres straight into a gorge below, and the mist it throws up is thick enough that the nearest town, Semonkong, was named for it. Semonkong means "site of smoke" in Sesotho. You can see the cloud of spray before you're anywhere near the edge.

When the water hits the basin, it echoes. Local legend holds that the sound is the wailing of those who drowned in the falls. Standing at the rim, it's hard to dismiss. For the adventurous, there's a Guinness World Record abseil — 204 metres of controlled descent straight down the gorge face, run by the lodge at Semonkong.
