Katse Dam tour

A close look at one of Africa's tallest dams, and the highland communities the water project reshaped.

Katse Dam is the centrepiece of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, standing 185m tall and holding back one of the largest reservoirs in Africa — an enormous feat of engineering set against an otherwise untouched mountain landscape.

The tour takes you along the dam wall and up to the viewpoints above it, with a look at how the project moves water (and generates hydropower) across the border into South Africa.

It's also a chance to talk honestly about the project's impact on the highland communities who were relocated to make way for the reservoir — part of getting the full picture of modern Lesotho, not just the postcard version.

It's an easy, low-effort stop that works well paired with a drive through the surrounding highlands, and suits travelers of any fitness level.
