Sani Pass 4x4 mountain drive
Switchback up the pass into Lesotho by 4x4, past the old border post and up to the highest pub in Africa.
Sani Pass is the drive that put this route on the map — a gravel switchback climbing roughly 1,300m in a few kilometres, from the South African border post up onto the Lesotho plateau. It's still one of the only ways in or out of this part of the highlands by vehicle.
You'll ride up in a proper 4x4 with an experienced local driver who knows every hairpin, stopping wherever the views (or the goats crossing the road) demand it. It's a genuinely rugged climb, not a scenic-route detour — expect some bumps and a few sharp drop-offs.
At the top, Sani Mountain Lodge holds the record for the highest pub in Africa, and it's become something of a rite of passage to toast the climb there with a warm drink and an even warmer welcome.
Plan on the better part of a day once you count the border crossing, the climb, and time at the top. It suits anyone reasonably comfortable with mountain roads — no technical skill required, just a stomach for the switchbacks.
